What is an Anti-wrinkle Botulinum Toxin?

There are a few commonly known brand names of anti-wrinkle injections and they are all derived from a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. A product of this naturally forming bacterium is the Botulinum toxin (Botox), which is used in small doses to make wrinkles disappear. Although it is a neurotoxin, Botulinum toxin is in the safe hands of an experienced doctor.

How do Botulinum toxin injections work?

For a muscle to move, a nerve has to release a signal called a neurotransmitter that signals the muscle. Botulinum toxin blocks the neurotransmitter thereby inhibiting the muscle from moving and creasing the skin. By blocking local nerves to the specific muscle, Botulinum toxin reduces your facial expressions such as frowning, and therefore the wrinkles that come with it.

We all know someone who has had Botulinum toxin and comes out looking 'frozen' with an expressionless face. A natural look that preserves your smile and softens your natural facial movements is the ideal treatment which requires a professional with just the right technique and a lot of experience.

Which areas can be treated by Botulinum toxin injections?

Common areas for injection approved by the TGA are the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. However, Dr. Rohde also uses it to soften neck and chin lines, shape the lip, soften lines around the mouth, and lift the corners of the mouth to remove the sad look.

What is the difference between Botulinum Toxin and a filler?

The filler consists of a natural hyaluronic acid scientifically formulated to fill the wrinkle. The Botulinum Toxin relaxes the muscle stretches the wrinkle with it and smooths it out. The amount and type of product injected and the techniques and skills used will determine the outcome of treatment.

The filler is best used to fill a static wrinkle i.e. the wrinkles you can see when you are not moving. The face and the Botulinum toxin relax the expression of wrinkles and therefore prevent new wrinkles from forming as well as treating older wrinkles mostly seen during facial expression. Both treatments can be used concurrently to produce a fresh natural look that preserves your natural expression and beauty.

There are many myths, horror stories and photos of cosmetic treatments 'gone wrong' and lunchtime treatments done by 'injectors'. Choosing an experienced professional is crucial. Dr Rohde provides a thorough pre-treatment assessment and post-treatment follow-up to ensure safe professional treatment, expected outcomes and satisfaction.

The cost of treatment is priced very competitively and discussed in consultation with Dr Rohde. If you have had treatments in the past Dr Rohde can provide treatment at the time of consultation. Otherwise, if you are considering your first treatment please book a consultation first for assessment and treatment suitability. The cost of the consultation is $120 and deducted from the total cost of the subsequent treatment.
