What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic rash involving the central face. It can affect anyone, and most commonly those with fair, blue eyes and Celtic origin. It may be transient, recurrent or persistent and it appears as a red colour and 'pimple' like eruptions.

What causes rosacea?

Hair follicle mites (Demodex folliculorum) are sometimes observed within rosacea papules but their role is unclear. An increased incidence of rosacea has been reported in those who carry the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori, but this may not be the cause of rosacea.

Rosacea may be aggravated by facial creams or oils, and especially by topical steroid cream use. Many triggers are also reported such as stress, emotion, alcohol, heat, preservatives and spicy food.

What is the treatment for rosacea?

While there is no cure for rosacea, the following treatment measures can help control the skin condition; reduce common triggers that cause flushing and breakouts, avoid oil-based facial creams and use water-based makeup and oil-free sunblock, and do not apply topical steroids to rosacea rash as it can make it more severe in the long run.

How is rosacea treated?

Dr Nada Rohde uses a holistic approach to the treatment of Rosacea. Daily skin cancer prevention targeting rosacea is recommended as well as a balanced diet and lifestyle. Avoiding alcohol, preservatives and fatty foods is very important. Keep your face cool and avoid 'heat' triggers such as stress helps reduce flushing and redness. A combination of oral antibiotics with a prescription of topical agents may help maintain remission.

BBL (Broad Band Light) is a safe, natural and very effective light treatment that reduces rosacea and improves skin tone and texture as well. My experience using BBL has been very positive. My patients are very happy with the result after only one treatment and report significantly less redness, 'pimples' and improved skin tone and texture. They are more confident and enjoy a natural foundation-free glow.

Ideally, a repeat treatment is required 6-12 weeks later for optimal results and ongoing maintenance usually yearly to maintain remission. Always protect your skin from harmful UV damage and use an oil-free SPF 50 plus protection.
